Mercedes instead of plane: from Moscow to Helsinki

<p>Our choice fell precisely on Helsinki, since to the Finnish capital from Moscow only 1100 km of the way, and the navigator shows approximately 14 hours of the road, but this without taking into account the stops and the border crossing.</ p>

<p>In the trip we went on all-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz E43 AMG – not the most economical car for long trips, but very fast and comfortable.</ p>

<p>We planned to leave early in the morning, so that this evening to have a walk in Helsinki, and not just fall asleep completely after spending a day on the road.</ p>

</ style><p>At 5:00 in the morning we leave the house to make it through before the traffic jams, but since we did not have time to change the money for the euro in advance, we decide to drive through the center in order to drop into the exchanger.</ p>

<p><strong>Moscow – Peter</ strong></ p>

<p>In the vicinity of 6:00 am we leave the city on the highway M10. Passage on the toll road M11, which goes from MKAD through Sheremetyevo and on to Solnechnogorsk, is not at night at night, as at that time Leningradka is usually still free.</ p>

<p>But traffic lights every two kilometers start to irritate pretty quickly, and a huge number of cameras on the way, which also strive to make you a “paid photo”, do not let you relax.</ p>

<p><span class ="idea">In E43 AMG it is very difficult to go without exceeding – you will relax a little and the speedometer starts showing dangerous figures, although you do not feel the speed at all.</ span></ p>

<p>The first goal was to reach the 208th kilometer of the route, where the congress is on the paid M11, which has no traffic lights, no settlements, no cameras. The section lasts for almost 130 kilometers, and the speed is 130 km / h, which means that you can drive up to 149 km / h without fines, especially since the design features of the four-lane road with the separation barrier between the oncoming flows make it quite possible.</ p>

<p>According to the passport E43 consumes on the highway only 6.7 liters, but it’s probably if you go 80 km / h without sudden acceleration and braking. In fact, the average expense for our entire motor race was about 11 liters per 100 km. On the one hand, for such an engine – it’s not much, on the other – on a conventional subcompact, the consumption would be 6 liters, which means that the trip would be 2 times more economical. By the way, AMG sedan is recommended for filling AM 98.</ p>

<p><strong>northern capital</ strong></ p>

<p>In general, with all the stops, the road to St. Petersburg took about 9 hours. At 15:00 we were already approaching the KAD, and then the path lay along the A-181 highway “Scandinavia” (E18) through Vyborg to MAPP “Torfyanovka”.</ p>

<p>But this time it was decided to drive the city not along the ring road, but to slip “through” through the new toll road of the WHSD (Western High-Speed ​​Diameter).</ p>

<p>The construction of this highway, with a length of almost 50 kilometers, began back in 2005, and ended only at the end of 2016. At its solemn opening came personally Vladimir Putin, and immediately after his departure … the road for ordinary drivers again closed for several days – to finish small “jambs”, which the president, of course, show “forgotten”.</ p>

<p>It is necessary to recognize that the track is very beautiful, and</ p>

<p><span class ="idea">thanks to the lanterns of a futuristic shape, hanging over the road, it resembles the skeleton of a huge animal inside which you are moving, a kind of St. Petersburg’s Leviathan.</ span></ p>

<p>The road is divided into four sections, each of which has to be paid. And as there is a northern section of a long 26 kilometers, passing into the track A-181.</ p>

<p>Due to the speed limit of 110 km / h, we passed the city in exactly 30 minutes, but for transportation along the entire length of the WHSD we had to pay 500 rubles.</ p>

<p>The further way on “Scandinavia” in 160 kilometers has occupied about two hours. This road has a rather bad reputation in connection with the regular fatal crashes that occur on it, including because of two-lane, a large number of trucks, violation of the high-speed regime by drivers, lack of separators and low illumination. Therefore, according to A-181, it’s better to go quite cautiously and during the daytime.</ p>

<p><strong>Window to Europe</ strong></ p>

<p>Since we were going to Helsinki to cross the border with Finland, it was most convenient for us in Torfyanovka. On this day of cars was surprisingly small and pass the Russian and Finnish border guards in just one hour.</ p>

<p>The capital of Finland was only 190 kilometers away, the window was still light, and the practical ideal and rather empty Finnish motorway allowed to move with the maximum permissible speed.</ p>

<p>Active cruise control, which is equipped with E43 was useful not once, and considering the massage function, which is equipped with both driver’s and passenger’s seat, the road was not at all tiring.</ p>

<p>When we drove up to Helsinki in the street was already getting dark, which allowed us to properly assess the illumination of the cabin. And the driver is allowed to choose not only its brightness, but also the color. In the dark, the interior of the “charged” sedan looks fantastic, we even had to muffle the brightness of the backlight and the screens on the front panel, so they did not blind in the dark.</ p>

<p>We drove to the hotel exactly after 2 hours, after crossing the border with Finland.</ p>

<p><span class ="idea">As a result, it turned out that the road from the house to the center of Helsinki took us only 14 hours, this considering all the stops, refueling and border crossing. Very good result.</ span></ p>

<p><strong>Difficulties of translation</ strong></ p>

<p>When we asked the young man at the reception, whether there is an inexpensive parking nearby, he told us that yes, very close to there is a paid parking “only” for 25 euros per day. Quickly multiplying this amount for 3 days, and then on the ruble exchange rate, it was decided to look for alternative options.</ p>

<p>Having unloaded the family with the things in the hotel, I went around the neighborhood in search of any cheaper (or maybe even free) parking lots.</ p>

<p>After making a few circles around the hotel and</ p>

<p><span class ="idea">and without finding any legal accessible places, I decided to act in Moscow – to look for parking in yards.</ span></ p>

<p>Apparently, the Finns have not guessed that in each yard, you can install barriers, so when I stopped in one of these yards I found a free place right next to the entrance of the house. True, a strange sign was installed nearby, but with inscriptions in Finnish, on which it was not possible to understand anything.</ p>

<p>Then I decided to leave our transport. Coming out of the car, I did not immediately leave, but walked around the car in anticipation that now someone from the windows of the house will start shouting to me, something like “take your bucket off my place”, as is usual in densely populated areas of Moscow.</ p>

<p>Since we lived almost in the center of the city, by car we decided not to move, but every day I went to check our Mercedes, lonely standing in foreign yards, with the idea that under the janitor there may be a receipt with a fine or that the car can be evacuated to the parking lot, or simply to puncture the tire. But, despite all the fears, all three days the car quietly stood in the courtyards in 5 minutes walk from the hotel.</ p>

<p><strong>Homecoming</ strong></ p>

<p>The return journey would take about the same amount of time, if not for the traffic jam on the border into which we got. In the end, they lost about 4 hours.</ p>

<p>Perhaps we had to choose another checkpoint, but we did not take care of it in advance and did not look at what happens at the border. St. Petersburg, we skirted already on the free KAD, but the paid sites M11 still used, because they really save time (and nerves).</ p>

<p><span class ="idea">When on the way back we were met by the usual Moscow traffic jams, the average speed dropped to 25 km / h, and the fuel consumption soared to 15.5 km / h.</ span></ p>

<p>It is clear that in the city E43 AMG becomes more voracious, but still, it’s far from being a passport 11 liters.</ p>

<p>The cost of the Mercedes-Benz E43 AMG 4Matic in the basic configuration is 5 374 000 rubles, but along with the additional options, the price easily transcends for 6 000 000 rubles. Unfortunately, it is not tempting to call this price even with a stretch.</ p>

<p><strong>The result</ strong></ p>

<p>Autotravel is a great way to go at any time where your eyes are looking, and even most of the time you save. But there is in this type of movement, of course the minuses and the main one is time. On the other hand, traveling by car is more interesting than traveling by plane: watching how the landscape changes behind the window, as cities and villages swim past, stopping on the way to cafes and restaurants, which they simply liked visually, but afraid to miss the plane and do not plan anything in advance .</ p>

<p>Concerning the costs, our way back and forth was about 2200 km. With an average flow of 11 liters per 100 km, 242 liters were obtained. With an average price for gasoline of 45 rubles per liter,</ p>

<p><span class ="idea">it turns out that the whole road cost about 11,000 rubles.</ span></ p>

<p>However, in addition to the price of gasoline, you still need to add the cost of the Green Card (analogues of the OSAGO, which operates outside the Russian Federation, and its minimum cost is 2,450 rubles.) And the cost of toll roads on the route.</ p>

<p>Considering that we traveled the four of us, the trip in any case was at least four times cheaper than the flight Moscow – Helsinki – Moscow at all.</ p>
